BYU Football is far away from home this week, playing their penultimate game of the regular season against the Minutemen of UMASS in Amherst, Massachusetts. The game will be early Saturday. And if you’re not in the New England area, it’s going to cost you if you want to see it, but we’ll get into that in a moment (for full broadcast details and explanations, check out this page).
This will be BYU’s first game since news broke that Coach Kalani Sitake has been extended through the 2023 season. That announcement officially came on Monday, after BYU’s win on Senior Day against Idaho State. The Cougars beat the Bengals, 42-10, and Tom Holmoe was seen in the locker room wearing an ‘Extend Kalani’ shirt afterwards. The win over Idaho State marked Zach Wilson’s return to play, and set the Cougars up for bowl eligibility. Immediately following, they were officially invited to the Hawaii Bowl. BYU’s record on the year is 6-4.
UMASS is 1-10 on the season, with that lone win coming back in Sept. against Akron, 37-29. They’ve lost six in a row since, last week at Northwestern, 45-6.
If you’ll be in Amherst, the year’s Color Guide says to wear navy blue. If you will be watching from home, here’s how you can do that:

For BYU … The Cougars, who have already received a bowl invitation, are looking to extend their four-game winning streak and build more momentum for next week’s game at San Diego State.

For BYU … The Cougars have posted a 10-4 record under coach Kalani Sitake in the month of November. BYU is 23-8 in November during the Independence era.
THE CRYSTAL BALL
UMass: The Minutemen are ranked No. 225 in the Sagarin Ratings. They are not only rated as the worst team in the FBS but they are also worse than most FCS programs.
BYU: The Cougars are favored by 40 points. That sounds about right.

The Massachusetts Minutemen need to shore up a defense that is allowing 52.36 points per game. UMass and the BYU Cougars will face off in an FBS Independents battle at noon ET on Saturday at Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium. UMass staggers into the contest hobbled by six consecutive losses while BYU skip in buoyed by four consecutive wins.
The Minutemen took a serious blow against the Northwestern Wildcats last week, falling 45-6. QB Randall West had a rough day: besides failing to produce a single touchdown, he threw one interception with only 175 yards passing.
BYU decided to play defense against itself, but the team still came out ahead despite 100 yards in penalties. They put the hurt on the Idaho State Bengals with a sharp 42-10 victory. BYU can attribute much of their success to RB Sione Finau, who rushed for 102 yards and one TD on 16 carries. That nimble footwork stands out as the first time Finau has hit the 100-yard rushing mark this season.

The Minutemen are the clear underdogs, so they’re hoping it’s the size of the fight that determines this one. Signs indicate that those betting on them against the spread won’t find the odds much better since the squad is 2-8 ATS when expected to lose.
BYU’s win lifted them to 6-4 while Massachusetts’ loss dropped them down to 1-10. Two stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Minutemen are stumbling into the matchup with the sixth most interceptions in the nation, having thrown 15 on the season. To make matters even worse for the Minutemen, the Cougars enter the contest having picked the ball off 14 times, good for third in the nation. BYU’s secondary is poised to pounce all over Massachusetts’ passing game.
